  • Goyang New Hallyu Performing Arts Company

    Established in 2012, the Goyang New Hallyu Performing Arts Company is an irregular troupe of artists consisting of 44 teams and 304 members – some of which are highly skilled teams selected from domestic auditions or the winners of art festivals held acrossSouth Korea. The choir performs a wide range of arts such as music (classical, K-pop, and other genres), puppetry, theatricals, and mime. Certain performance teams that cover the Seoul metropolitan area are selected according to the nature and schedule of events.

    ImjingakPyeonghoaNuri is a cultural complex designed to turn the symbol of the conflict between North and South Korea into a symbol of reconciliation, coexistence, peace, and unity. The complex operates DMZ experiential programs and holds various cultural arts programs such as performances, exhibitions, and films. There are also various facilities for visitors, includingthe large open-air theater Hill of Music, able to seat 25,000 persons, the cafeteria Café Yannyeong, and the Hill of Wind, which has over 3,000 weathervanes spinning with the elements.

    Goyang Aram Nuri is a professional performing arts center, with aramnuri meaning ‘large beautiful world’ in Korean. The center consists of a number of facilities, including the Aram Opera House with seating for 1,887 persons, the Aram Concert Hall – known for its high-quality acoustics – with seating for 1,449, and theSaerasae Digital Theater with 281 adjustable seats.Other facilities include the Aram Art Gallery, which provides a flexible space for various functions and the Norumok Outdoor Theater, set against the forests of Mt. Jeongbalsan. In addition, visitors can enjoy the Aram Library, Aram Village, and the Aram Sun Plaza, where refreshments are available. Goyang Aram Nuri runs various seasonal cultural programs, so checking its event calendar ahead of time is recommended.

    International Horticulture Goyang Korea is held every spring between April and May atIlsan Lake Park in Goyang City. The fair consists of indoor and outdoor exhibitions and also events held on the park’s outdoor stage. The indoor exhibitions involve 240 domestic and international floral breedsat theFlower Export, Eco, Rare Plants, New Varieties Flower, and Goyang Special Pavilions, and also at the‘flower library’. Visitors can also enjoy spectacular flower art produced by prominent florists at the Flower Art Hall. Walks throughout the Lake Park are also recommended.

  • Jarasum Jazz Festival

    Korea’s top jazz festival, Jarasum is held every fall from the beginning of October for 3-4 days onJara Island (aka Jarasum) inGapyeong County and in the Gapyeong City area itself. About 500-600 international and domestic jazz musicians attend the festival every year, with a steadily-growing audience of jazz enthusiasts that in 2012 hit 1 million since it first opened in 2004, makingJarasum the largest jazz festival in Asia. Many of the biggest names in the genre regularly perform, with jazz musicians from around the world actively welcomed as part of efforts to make Jarasum a truly international event.An experience not to be missed by any enthusiast of the jazz oeuvre, Jarasum is a great opportunity to meet with fellow jazz fans and camp outdoors in a cool, swinging environment.

  • AnseongBaudeogi Festival

    A traditional arts festival held annually at the end of September or early October at AnseongMachum Land. It was the city of Anseong which gave birth to namsadang,Korea’s first popular performance dating from the Joseon period, and the festival aims to hand down the traditions as well as develop the artistic spirit of the genre. Although a distinctly Korean festival, AnseongBaudeogi has received international recognition as being one of the world’s top cultural festivals and has been designated an “official festival” of the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts (CIOFF), an NGO that has formal consultative relations with UNESCO. The event always includes performances of namsadang and street parades, while outside of the festival,AnseongMachum Land hosts permanent performances of namsadang every weekend. Weekday shows are available on request.

  • Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival

    The Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival, held annually in early fall, is one of Korea’s biggest cultural tourism events. The festival aims to preserve and pass on the history and importance of the Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to future generations, as well as to commemorate the memory of King Jeongjo, who built the fortress. Jeongjo is also remembered for his filial piety and as a reformer who brought about a renaissance to Joseon Korea. Some of the festival’s highlights include a “total” martial arts display, citizen’s parade, and a reenactment of the procession conducted by Jeongjo in 1795 to commemorate the 60th birthday of his mother, Lady Hyegyeong.

  • Suwon Hwaseong Fortress Theatre Festival

    This performance arts festival takes place at Suwon’s Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Using fireworks, video, sound and other objects, the essence of contemporary theatre is presented to the audience. Troupes from Korea and abroad are represented at the festival, as well as a range of citizen-led theatre, especially original community theatre featuring amateur actors. A wide range of everyday objects such as used cars, tires, fabric andetc are used to decorate the stage, offering visitors a unique experience.

  • Icheon Rice Cultural Festival

    During Korea’s time of dynastic rule, the Icheon region was famed for its rice, with the best productsbeing served directly to the king of the day. Icheon rice is reputed to stir the appetite; the grains are lustrous, having been exposed to the warm sun, clear waters, and grown in fertile land. The festival is held every year in order to commemorate and keep alive traditional agricultural culture for the current generations. To this end, a variety of traditional folk games including the geobuknori (turtle dance), Icheonrice cooking competition, sesipungsokmadangnorias well as hands-on programs such as making songpyeon (stuffed rice cake eaten on holidays) and garaetteok (long rice cake),are held for the public.

    This festival exhibits the rich history and quality of Icheon’s ceramics culture through programs such as a special exhibition of master artisans from Icheon, ceramics exhibitions and sales.
